Silence of the Lambs
The Silence of the Lambs is a 1991 American horror-thriller film directed by Jonathan Demme where a young F.B.I. cadet must confide in an incarcerated and manipulative killer to receive his help on catching another serial killer who skins his victims. This poster follows the film convention that horror posters often use close up shots of faces. The faces used are usually those of victims who have suffered in someway throughout the film. This poster differs from the traditional sense, as it has certain elements which are in vivid colour, such as the moth and the woman's eyes. This contrast in colour draws in the eyes of the viewer, especially to the skull that is in the centre, this connotes to the fact a skull represents death, tying back to the title which may indicate silence caused by death. The title itself is also in a bright font which stands out against the almost monochromic background however it uses a weird colour therefore confusing the viewer, this makes them uneasy which gives a good introduction to the theme of the movie. |
Cabin Fever-
This poster instantly shows the theme of the movie with the main red hue, the red hue links with the title as it shows that the picture is within this fever, the cabin part of the title links in with the fact there is a cabin within the picture and shows that this will be the main location as it links in with the title. The disease like nature of the title joins in with the little motto at the bottom titled catch it! this shows that this title is linked to a disease and they are most likely gonna catch it if they enter the cabin, which they probably won't know. The fact the red hue is looking at the cabin shows that the creature with this disease may be looking towards the cabin, therefore the characters within the cabin are most likely going to be killed or they'll catch the disease. The fact the cabin is surround by these tall trees adds to the idea of loneliness within this abandoned cabin. This plays with the stereotypical feelings within the horror genre. When looking at the poster in depth it it shown there is a skull made out of the trees and sky, this also plays with the horror genre as it is typically shown within this genre. The fact the skull is shown through a mixture of the foreground and background has a sense of secrecy to it as you wouldn't see the skull straight off, however your subconcious might see it and therefore it unconsciously leaves the viewer with a sense of anxiety as there is a symbol relating to death within it. This skull could also represent the idea that the cabin fever could end up killing it's victim and therefore everyone who will enter this cabin will die because of this. The skull also has a demonic vibe to it as it has a red hue above it and therefore it relates to pentagrams and satan as they are normally depicted as red. |
IT
Directed by Andy Muschietti, IT is an American supernatural horror based on the 1986 novel by Stephen King. The film tells the story of seven children who are terrorised by a dancing clown while facing their own personal demons in the process. This poster has a cliche idea of children getting gifts from strangers, this links with the quote 'stranger danger', this is probably amplifying the child horror of stranger danger and therefore basing this film with this theme. There is also the theme of clown cliches within the horror genre, this is shown through how the main protagonist is a creepy clown, who is chasing this children. Within this poster it uses bold colours to represent different ideas, for example the red balloon represents danger, and since the clown is both holding it and can be seen within it shows that the clown is dangerous. Yellow is seen as a childish colour and therefore it can represent naivety, it can also represent optimism which could represent the idea the children will make it through the clowns terror someway. Even the name IT plays on the childish idea of playing a game where one person is trying to get the other person. This kind of represents the clown in a weird childish manner and therefore it adds to a creepy atmosphere. Having the clown loosely represented as a child adds to the horror as the character is this sadistic clown adult but with the mind of a child. |
